The Canadian band Tragically Hip – often referred to simply as The Hip – from Kingston, Ontario, consists of Gordon Downie (lead vocals and guitar), Paul Langlois (guitar), Rob Baker (guitar), Gord Sinclair (bass), and Johnny Fay (drums). The band, known for energetic, improvisational performances, were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2005. Their latest album, released in February, is We Are the Same.

Legendary Canadian literary and musical icon Leonard Cohen, 74, is returning to the live stage in the US for his first tour in 15 years. Cohen was on tour in Europe for much of the past year, and a recently released live CD and DVD – both entitled Live in London – from that stint has been receiving rave reviews.

Vern Thiessen’s
A More Perfect Union

Edmonton favorite son and Governor General’s Award-winning playwright Vern Thiessen is one of Canada’s most produced playwrights, and, in recent years, his work has been getting a great deal of attention stateside. New York’s Epic Theatre Ensemble, which presented Thiessen`s Einstein’s Gift in its US premiere and has presented workshop readings of the playwright’s Apple and Shakespeare’s Will, among other works, will produce Thiessen’s A More Perfect Union this spring. The play, which was commissioned by Epic and concerns two law clerks at the US Supreme Court who have very different backgrounds and opposing political views, will begin performances on May 5th and run through June 7th. Canada at Fleet Week 2009

Intrepid Museum
The City of New York and the Intrepid Museum present Navy Fleet Week, featuring over a dozen US Navy and Coast Guard ships, as well as ships from all over the world. This year, Canada is represented by five ships, which will be open daily for free public tours. Military demonstrations, athletic competitions, and many other exciting activities are scheduled throughout the week-long celebration. One highlight of these activities will be the Memorial Day ceremony held on the flight deck of the Intrepid. The observance will include a ceremonial wreath laying, a 21-gun salute, the unfurling of a 100-foot American flag, and a fly-over by military aircraft in the missing man formation.
